One of the biggest advantages of this community is an easy access to major metro areas and vacation and entertainment hot spots (Philadelphia, Wilmington, Atlantic City, New York).
Major Towns in Southern Delaware
Rehoboth Beach Delaware is known as the Nation's Summer Capital because of the large number of Washingtonians who vacation here in summer. With a mile-long boardwalk on the Atlantic Ocean, Rehoboth has long been a summer playground. Recently, however, shopping has become a major pasttime in the area with hundreds of tax-free factory outlet stores on Route 1.Bethany Beach Delaware forms the "Quiet Resorts" with Fenwick Island and South Bethany, its neighbors to the south. A popular summer tourist destination, Bethany's year-round population of 350 residents balloons to 40,000 beach-goers eager to escape the big cities for the town's Atlantic Ocean beaches. Swimming, surfing, fishing, boating in nearby bays, kite flying, beachcombing, strolling the quarter-mile boardwalk, summer concerts on the bandstand, and shopping and dining in the mid-town business district are just some of the favorite pasttimes in Bethany. Now 102 years old, Bethany Beach is located on Route 1 and Route 26, about 10 miles south of Rehoboth Beach and 8 miles north of Ocean City, providing easy access to the attractions of those large summer resorts, while offering a peaceful escape from their hustle and bustle.
Dewey Beach Delaware has long been a summer hangout for college age kids with its exciting nightlife, an image the town's 2,000 property owners and 228 year-round residents have been trying to tone down in recent years. Sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth Bay, Dewey is a haven for skimboarding, sailboarding, sailing, kayaking, and boating.
Lewes Delaware is the oldest town in Delaware. Founded in 1631, Lewes is known as the "First Town in the First State". It was settled by the Dutch and is known for the many historic buildings preserved in the city. In addition to historic sight-seeing including a walking tour of the city's historic district, Lewes is well-known for its fishing marinas, charter boats, its Victorian architecture, its bay and ocean beaches, and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. More recently, Lewes has become a shopping mecca with a charming downtown shopping district on Second Street and tax-free outlet shopping on Route 1 in nearby Rehoboth Beach.
Georgetown, The Sussex County seat, was founded and incorporated in 1791. The town's center, "The Circle", is listed in the National Historic Record with a number of historic buildings including the Sussex County Courthouse. The Circle is also the site every two years of Return Day, an festival to "announce" the winners of that November's elections and bring opposing candidates together to "bury the hatchet".
